Whilst golden sandy beaches are not Madeira’s strong point (its sister island Porto Santo is better for that) there are some wonderful hotels with direct access to the sea, across pebbles or just a lick of beach.
Pull up your maps app and pick a spot in the middle of the Atlantic ocean - not as far west as Bermuda but south of the Azores. It will take some zooming in to locate this tiny, volcanic island, but once you find it, you’ll never want to leave.
There is a large relief map of Madeira when you arrive at Funchal Airport. You will see Funchal on the map and then pinpoint other places you have read about. What the map doesn’t tell you is just how varied the island is and how much the island has
